Vietnam, a very special country
Many travelagents can offer you touristic or adventurous organized tours in which you will get an overview of the country in 3 or 4 weeks. But you can also just book a ticket to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh-city and do-it-yourself. It is very easy to travel in Vietnam on your own. Everywhere you'll easily find an hotel or guesthouse to stay in and touring the country by train, touringcar, taxi, bicycle or plane is no problem. Above all, Vietnam is a relatively safe country to travel in, also for women. Senior citizens will enjoy a stay in Vietnam, because they will be treated by the Vietnamese with lots of respect.
Each year the number of tourists visiting Vietnam goes up. In the year 2005 there were already 3,5 mio. of them. Nevertheless, these numbers are still modest when compared to the tens of millions of holidaymakers that visit Spain or France. The Vietnamese authorities acknowledge that mass tourism can have negative consequences for both society and environment. Corruption, prostitution and the number of people with HIV-infection are all increasing and these problem have to be dealt with. Many new hotel are being built along the coast, sometimes spoiling the beautiful view or landscape.
Nevertheless, the authorities mainly have eyes for the advantages. The influx of money and the increasing number of jobs in the tourist business, and above all the renewed interest of foreign investors for a country that has lived in isolation for many years. The tourist love the Vietnamese people for their kindness, they take interest in the history, the culture, the traditions and above all the delicious Vietnamese cuisine. Enjoy your holiday in Vietnam!
